Caring for water, by working with it.

Probiotic care means less chemistry in the water, less chemistry down the drain, less on your skin. We design every detail — formula, bottle, shipping — to give back more than it takes.

Formula & ingredients

Four ingredients. Less chemistry. Same effect.

We design the formula starting from compatibility — with your skin, with your spa's materials, and with everything that happens after the water is drained.

  • AquaCarrier medium. Pure water, nothing else.
  • Bacillus FermentProbiotic cultures, Safety Class 1. Non-pathogenic, naturally found in soil and water.
  • PhenoxyethanolMild preservative under 1%. We chose the lowest amount that keeps a live culture stable on the shelf.
  • EthylhexylglycerinCo-preservative, skin-friendly, biodegradable.
What's not in it
  • Microplastics, glitter, or synthetic polymers
  • Chlorine, bromine, or reactive shock oxidizers
  • Phosphates and sulfates
  • Artificial dyes and fragrances
  • Animal testing or animal-derived ingredients

Packaging

Only what has to be there.

Every packaging decision is a trade-off between protection, hygiene, and end-of-life. We make ours openly and with nothing hidden behind the marketing.

What we use
  • HDPE-2 bottle, supplied by Distriflac (Belgium) — mono-material, fully recyclable in standard German waste streams.
  • FSC-certified recycled shipping box.
  • Paper tape instead of plastic tape.
  • Single-layer label — easy to separate from the bottle.
  • Soy-based inks on box and label.
What we avoid
  • Virgin PET or virgin HDPE from petroleum where recycled content is available.
  • Plastic filler, bubble wrap, styrofoam chips.
  • Glossy laminates and mixed materials.
  • Marketing inserts that go straight to recycling.

Bottle supplier: Distriflac N.V., Belgium (distriflac.be) — specialists in HDPE/PET packaging with a focus on recyclability.

Operations

Water, energy, routes.

Care that uses less doesn't start at the customer. We look at where our operations save water, energy, and miles — and where we still have work to do.

Water

Probiotic care extends the time between water changes. You change less often — and when you do, the water is biodegradable and safe for garden or greywater.

Energy

Fewer chemical spikes means more stable water chemistry. Filters and heaters work less hard against shock cycles — a small but constant effect on power use.

Routes

Production in Belgium, end-to-end shipping with DHL. We deliberately avoid intercontinental supply chains and repacking stops.

Carbon

We don't publish a verified product carbon footprint today. Rather than a marketing number nobody can back, we say honestly: it's on the list — see goals.

Production

Made in Belgium. Tested batch by batch.

Every bottle of WhirlBiotic is produced in Belgium — under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 and with microbiological testing on every batch.

EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009

Full compliance, documented via CPNP notification and safety assessment by a qualified person.

Microbiologically tested batch by batch

Before release, every batch is tested for live culture count, contamination, and stability.

Safety Class 1 only

Only Bacillus strains classified as non-pathogenic. Safe for people, pets, and materials.

Traceable

From culture strain to bottle — every batch carries a number we can trace back to its source material.

Independent testing

Real labs, not certification logos.

We deliberately chose not to collect a wall of certification badges. For a non-chemical, biodegradable formula, many of those seals aren't the right yardstick. We test with independent labs instead.

Switzerland

Microbiological validation

Swiss labs validate the stability of the live cultures, the purity of the finished product, and compatibility with real spa materials.

Belgium

Material compatibility & packaging

Belgian partner labs test the interaction with our HDPE-2 bottle and the long-term stability under normal storage.

Why no traditional certification?
  • 01Many eco-seals are designed for chemical industrial products — they measure things we deliberately don't contain.
  • 02Certification bodies often charge high annual fees that raise the end price without adding substance to the product.
  • 03We'd rather spend that money on actual lab tests — on every batch, instead of once every three years.
  • 04EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 is our binding legal framework. Everything beyond it we test transparently ourselves.
Goals & roadmap

Where we're headed — honestly, no marketing gloss.

We only publish goals we're actually working toward. If things change, this list changes too.

2026
Current year
  • Publish our first transparency note — current state of ingredients, packaging, suppliers.
  • Track shipping CO₂ per order internally (foundation for a later public release).
  • Further simplify label material — goal: fully recyclable with the bottle, no separation needed.
2027
Planned
  • First external Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the 1 L bottle.
  • Evaluate and, if food-grade recycled HDPE is available, introduce recycled content in the bottle.
  • Document a full year of production energy use in Belgium.
2028
Long-term
  • Publish a verified product carbon footprint.
  • Climate-neutral shipping via certified offsetting or direct investment.
  • Partner with a university for independent research on the effect of probiotic spa care on greywater.

Transparency

What we publish — and what we don't (yet).

We don't turn unknowns into marketing. This list shows openly where we have solid data and where we're still working.

What we publish
  • Full INCI list on every bottle.
  • Country of production (Belgium).
  • Bottle supplier (Distriflac, Belgium).
  • Testing locations (Switzerland, Belgium).
  • Returns and withdrawal terms.
  • Batch number and best-before date on every bottle.
What we don't (yet)
  • Verified product carbon footprint — planned for 2028.
  • External Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) — planned for 2027.
  • Exact recycled content share in the bottle.
  • Scope 3 emissions from the supply chain.

Sustainability · FAQ

What customers ask about sustainability.

Is the formula really fully biodegradable?

Yes. All four ingredients are biodegradable. You can safely drain your spa water at end-of-life into garden or greywater — an important difference from chlorine- or bromine-treated water, which stresses aquatic ecosystems.

Why HDPE-2 instead of glass?

Glass would actually be worse for a single product: heavier in shipping, higher breakage risk, energy-intensive to make. HDPE-2 as a mono-material is fully recyclable in the standard German waste stream — and it's the packaging that keeps our live cultures most stable.

Why phenoxyethanol if you're 'natural'?

A live culture needs a preservative — otherwise the bottle becomes unstable on the shelf. Phenoxyethanol below 1% is one of the mildest preservatives the EU Cosmetics Regulation permits, and it's not bioaccumulative. We use the smallest possible amount.

Do you have an organic seal or eco-certification?

No, by choice. Many seals are designed for chemical industrial products or are expensive without adding substance to ours. Instead we use independent labs in Switzerland and Belgium — and we publish what we measure.

Can I drain the water into my garden after treatment?

With pure WhirlBiotic care: yes. If you've additionally treated your water with chlorine or bromine, the usual rules for discharge apply — let the water off-gas first or check local regulations.

Are there any animal tests?

No. WhirlBiotic is vegan, cruelty-free, and contains no animal-derived ingredients. Animal testing on finished cosmetic products has been banned in the EU since 2013 — we go further by also rejecting animal testing on individual ingredients.

Do you offset shipping?

Not yet via certified offsetting — we don't want to buy a 'climate-neutral' label before measuring the actual shipping footprint. Measuring runs through 2026. Public release and offset model are planned for 2028.

Where are you independently tested?

In labs in Switzerland (microbiological validation of live cultures and purity) and Belgium (material compatibility with our HDPE-2 packaging and long-term stability).
