The science

Living water, explained.

This page explains the proposed mechanism of probiotic cultures, their use, and their limitations. It distinguishes general research from product-specific statements about WhirlBiotic.

Mechanism

How probiotics actually keep water clean.

The effect rests on an ecological principle: a beneficial microbiome occupies surfaces and nutrients faster than harmful microbes can.

  • 01

    Competitive exclusion

Bacillus cultures grow faster than pathogenic microbes and colonize tub surfaces, pipes and filters first. Where they sit, harmful bacteria find neither space nor food.

  • 02

Organic deposits broken down at the source

Instead of only treating organic deposits at the surface, the cultures digest the organic residues that create them — skin oils, sweat, body-care products. The problem dissolves continuously rather than being masked.

  • 03

    Lower organic load

Fewer organic compounds means less reactive material for chlorine and bromine to chase. Where disinfection is mandated, you can maintain stable water with much smaller amounts — and the water stays less odorous.

  • 04

    Self-balancing population

Once available nutrients are metabolized, the culture moves into a dormant state. There is no overgrowth — the system regulates itself.

Chemistry vs. biology

Two approaches. Two very different outcomes.

Conventional disinfection works reactively — it reacts with everything, including skin and materials. A probiotic approach works preventively — it removes the very basis on which harmful microbes live.

Conventional chemistry

Chlorine · bromine · shock

  • Works by oxidation — attacks microorganisms, skin lipids and seals indiscriminately.
  • Reactive byproducts (chloramines, trihalomethanes) irritate eyes and airways at warm water temperatures.
  • Organic deposits in the pipework re-form within hours after every dose.
  • Constant measurement and adjustment of pH, hardness and active levels required.
  • Drain water must be treated as chemically loaded — not suitable for gardens or greywater.
The WhirlBiotic approach

Living microbiome

  • Works by displacement — beneficial cultures occupy surfaces before harmful ones settle.
  • pH-neutral, odorless, no off-gassing. Suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Breaks down organic deposits where they form — pipes and filters stay cleaner for the long term.
  • Self-stabilizing. One weekly dose is enough to maintain.
  • Fully biodegradable — drain water is safe for gardens and greywater.
The cultures

Bacillus ferment — what we use, and why.

We rely exclusively on Bacillus strains that occur naturally in waters and soils, and that have been used for decades in water treatment, aquaculture and food production.

Safety class 1

Non-pathogenic

All strains we use are classified as Safety Class 1 under European classification — they do not cause illness in healthy people or animals.

Spore form

Stable up to 60 °C

Bacillus cultures form spores that remain active at spa temperatures above 40 °C. They survive short peaks up to 60 °C without losing efficacy.

Heterotrophic

Feeds on organic material

The cultures feed on exactly what you don't want in the water — skin oils, sweat, lotions, body-care products. No extra food source needed.

Evidence & testing

What we base the claims on.

We combine an in-house lab with external accredited testing facilities. Every batch is verified before leaving the plant — for purity, strain composition and stability.

  • Strain purity and concentration confirmed by microbiological analysis on every batch.
  • Stability testing over multiple months under controlled temperature conditions.
  • Dermatological compatibility verified externally — including at spa-typical water temperatures.
  • Material compatibility tested on acrylic, EPDM seals and stainless-steel components.

Detailed data sheets and declarations of conformity are available on request for hotels, wellness operators and business customers.

Safety profile

What is safe — and what to watch for.

Safe to combine with

  • sensitive skin, babies, children and pets
  • jewelry, swimwear and acrylic tubs
  • moderate amounts of chlorine or bromine (legally mandated levels)
  • common pH regulators
  • filter systems and ozone units in normal operation

Effect can be temporarily reduced by

  • acute chlorine or bromine shock dosing (high peaks)
  • high-concentration hydrogen peroxide
  • amine-based biocides and algicides
  • intense UV exposure for many hours at low circulation

After shock doses or heavy UV exposure subside, the microbiome rebuilds itself within a few days — a new start phase is only needed after long interruptions.

Ingredients

Four ingredients. No hidden actives.

We publish the full formulation. If a manufacturer doesn't fully disclose ingredients, you know why.

  • 01

    Aqua

    Carrier

Demineralized water as the carrier medium. Ensures even distribution of the cultures in your spa water.

  • 02

    Bacillus Ferment

    Probiotic active

Live, non-pathogenic Safety Class 1 cultures. The actual active — digests organic residue and stabilizes the water's microbiome.

  • 03

    Phenoxyethanol

    Preservative

A mild, well-established cosmetic preservative. Keeps the formulation stable in the bottle without harming the cultures.

  • 04

    Ethylhexylglycerin

    Co-preservative

Skin-friendly co-preservative. Reduces the amount of phenoxyethanol needed and improves skin compatibility.

Environment

Spa care you can drain without thinking twice.

100% biodegradable

Every active fully breaks down in the environment. Tested against OECD standards for ready biodegradability.

Greywater-friendly

In most regions drain water can be sent through normal drainage or onto planted areas. No chemical-waste classification.

Concentrate format

High active density in a small volume — less packaging, less transport weight, lower CO₂ footprint per application.

Science FAQ

What customers want to know on the technical side.

Does WhirlBiotic work alongside chlorine or bromine?

Yes, in moderate amounts. The cultures tolerate normal maintenance levels of chlorine and bromine. Very high peaks — for example during a shock disinfection — can temporarily suppress them. Once the peak subsides, the microbiome rebuilds itself within a few days.

Do ozone or UV units kill the cultures?

Not in normal operation. Ozone and UV mainly act on free-floating microorganisms. Bacillus cultures sit on surfaces and inside filters — there they are protected. Continuous, very intense UV exposure with low circulation can reduce the effect.

Does it work in saltwater spas?

Yes. Typical spa salt concentrations (3 – 6 g/l) are not a problem. In salt systems that generate chlorine electrolytically, the same applies as with conventional chlorine: moderate maintenance levels are fine.

From what water temperature do the cultures work?

Activity rises noticeably from around 20 °C and reaches its optimum in the typical spa range of 35 – 40 °C. Short peaks up to 60 °C are handled comfortably thanks to the spore form.

How long does a bottle keep?

Unopened, at least 24 months from the production date when stored cool and dark. After opening, we recommend using within 12 months. The best-before date is printed on every bottle.

When can I get back in the water after dosing?

Right away. WhirlBiotic is not a shock dose — the water stays usable during and after dosing. We recommend briefly running the pumps so the culture distributes evenly.

Does the water cloud at the start?

Light, temporary cloudiness in the first hours after the very first dose is normal — it clears as the cultures settle in. With weekly maintenance dosing this no longer occurs.

Is it safe if a pet accidentally drinks from it?

Small amounts are harmless because only Safety Class 1 cultures are contained. As with any care product: keep out of reach of children and animals, and seek veterinary advice if unsure.
